Sega announced that it will be publishing The Cave, the new adventure game from Ron Gilbert (Maniac Mansion, The Secret of Monkey Island), which is set for a release sometime in early 2013. In development at Double Fine (unrelated to the studio’s now famous Kickstarter project), The Cave will release digitally on Playstation Network, Xbox Live Arcade and PC, keeping in line with the developer’s retooling of their release strategy back in 2010. Sega’s Senior Vice President of Digital Business Haruki Satomi stated that the release is the first part of the publisher’s plan to focus and expand its own digital gaming catalog.

Spoiling their own announcement half a day early, some overeager Activision employee launched the publisher’s official reveal site for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. Confirming the rumored November 13th deadline, Activision included the following blurb describing the upcoming schedule: Pushing the boundaries of what fans have come to expect from the record-setting entertainment franchise, Call of Duty®: Black Ops 2 propels players into a near future, 21st Century Cold War, where technology and weapons have converged to create a new generation of warfare.

An Amazon product page (since removed) and a debut trailer have likely circumvented Sony’s big 4-19-12 announcement, revealing the development of the next game in the God of War franchise. Supposedly “the most ambitious…adventure in the series so far”, God of War: Ascension, like Chains of Olympus before it, will prequel the events in the numbered titles of the series. The trailer and product page remain cryptic on any other details, with the description only asking players to “Join Kratos as he seeks freedom, redemption, and the clarity to avenge his family.”

Capcom has surprised us all again with its continued unorthodox treatment of Resident Evil 6‘s release date. First the publisher broke it’s own mold by announcing a release date in the game’s debut trailer (a first for the franchise and its notoriously belated launches), and now the latest media for the game has its release window bumped up a month. According to RE6‘s Captivate trailer, the action-horror shooter will be arriving on October 2nd, a full month and three weeks ahead of its original November 22nd deadline.

An announcement trailer for Lost Planet 3 was one of the bigger announcements coming out of Capcom’s Captivate event this year, especially with the change in developers. Capcom has moved production on the shooter westward to Spark Unlimited (Call of Duty: Finest Hour, Legendary), with the game apparently returning to the frozen wastelands of the original Lost Planet, if the trailer is any indication.

Robot Entertainment proudly announced Orcs Must Die! 2 on their official website earlier today. The sequel will follow the real-time action/tower defense formula of the original, while adding a new story campaign and upgrade system. A Sorceress companion, a former War Mage, will play heavily into the events that pit you against hordes of new enemies. A host of new defense options and weaponry have also been promised.

Turns out, gamers actually will pay money to get a new adventure game. If it’s by Tim Schafer, they’ll even crowd fund it before production even begins. The folks at Double Fine opened a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for a budget of a combined adventure game/documentary production. The Adventure Game+ project’s goal was to raise $400,000 ($300k for game, $100k for documentary) by March 13th. The surpassed that goal after just eight hours online, and at the time of this report, are fast approaching the $1.75 million mark.

What was once in Activision’s hands as True Crime: Hong Kong has just been reintroduced under Square Enix as Sleeping Dogs. Prior to this rebirth, the game was cancelled by Activision last year, at the same time as Guitar Hero, before the game assets were picked up by Square Enix. The rights to the original IP – and the True Crime name – remain with Activision. Still keeping its production under United Front Games, the renamed open-world shooter is scheduled for release late this year for PC, PS3, and 360.

In a game where you can create a tag team of a morbidly obese bearded man and a brown bear to fight a tag team of an equally obese non-bearded man and that guy from Infamous, non-traditional characters are expected. Even so, a recent trailer for Street Fighter x Tekken teases some pretty unconventional entrants from both Capcom and Namco Bandai’s catalog.

Electronic Arts and Klei Entertainment debuted the first trailer for Shank 2 as part of a joint press conference earlier today. Turns out, THQ had to cancel more than just Red Faction to make up for a bad quarter. Some footage of a first-person action game set in the “Avengers” movie universe, once under production at THQ Australia, leaked over the weekend. The trailer – since removed from its original perch on Youtube – can be seen here. A rare first-person super-venture, the game seemed to split its focus on the Avengers’ most iconic members of Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man, each with a unique set of moves and special abilities to use against the legendary Marvel team’s many foes.

Paradox Interactive is looking outside the realm of strategy with their newest game, War of the Roses. A multiplayer-focused action combat game, the campaign stretches across the 30 year war between the houses of York and Lancaster back in the 15th century. Developed by Fatshark Interactive, Roses will also include “unique team-oriented competitive multiplayer experience with an emphasis on melee combat.” War of the Roses is scheduled for sometime in 2012, no consoles have been confirmed.
The Playstation Network has been a depository for quirk before, no doubt, but Sideway is carving a niche for itself on an already niche-filled platform. For starters, you play as a living spray of graffiti, bounding about street art on and around the corners of various building-sized levels. The controls are your age-old basic, with single and double jumps and collectibles (here realized as spray cans), all set to a hip-hip soundtrack.
It’s rare for a game with Pokemon in the title to not be what you expect, but the indelible franchise’s first outing on Nintendo’s 3DS won’t have you obsessively capturing and battling creatures, at least not in the way you are used to. Pokemon Rumble Blast (tentative title) – sequel to the WiiWare’s Pokemon Rumble - plays out more like a beat-em-up with toys, think “Gotta Rock ‘Em, Sock ‘Em All”. The game supports StreetPass functionality (automating battles between your Pokemon and those of whom you pass), and two-player wireless bouts.
