Angela Emery, vice-president of Communications at Disney Interactive Studios, has confirmed that the upcoming pirate-themed action-RPGĀ Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned has been cancelled. The game was originally revealed to the general public in May 2009, and was set for a release somewhere in 2011.

Following the cancellation of Armada of the Damned, Disney has conducted a restructuring of the development studio Propaganda Games. One of the two development teams at this studio has been dissolved, with members of this team either being assigned to work on another game in development at Propaganda Games, TRON: Evolution, or losing their jobs. According to unconfirmed reports, several staff member in the TRON: Evolution development team have also been let go this week, bringing the total number of employees that have laid off to around a hundred. In a much more intimate response than many received in this controversy over EA and Danger Close’s Medal of Honor, former United States Marine Benjamin Busch compares current gaming to the imaginary games of generations past. Deployed as an infantry officer for two combat tours in Iraq, Busch sees the game as making the current conflicts in the middle east into passive, removed experiences, dubbing them “participatory cinema,” among other things. He outlined his thoughts in an essay to NPR.org, excerpts of which follow after the jump.

The legendary RTS model (and inspiration for an addictive Swedish techno song) Defense of the Ancients has been reborn by Valve, and is heading to PC and Mac in 2011. Gameinformer got the early spread of details, and it looks like Valve is keeping the cartoonish artstyle and revolutionary gameplay, along with updated graphics all running on the latest Source engine.
